——THE ESSENTIALS——
MY MAN GODFREY (Gregory La Cava)
Like the better-known Frank Capra and Leo McCarey, Gregory La Cava cut his teeth on silent comedy shorts in the 20’s. With films like STAGE DOOR (1937) and this one, he proved just as adept in knowing how to strike just the right tone for comedies with a heart. William Powell and Carole Lombard were real-life exes when MY MAN GODFREY was made. While no longer man and wife, their respect for each other never dimmed. Their pairing is magical in this tale of a screwball New York high society family and the “forgotten man” who has the mixed blessing of becoming involved with the wacky, but adorable daughter. An enduring comic masterpiece.
